Bird nest update

So, I woke up one morning to find that the bird in the nest outside our window was gone...along with the egg. :-( I have no idea what happened. I'm not an expert, but that bird sat on the egg for quite a long time so I'm wondering if the bird got hungry and left the nest only to return with the egg having been attacked by something else? There is no evidence of a shell anywhere either. Interesting...
